Walk down any grocery store aisle in the US and you'll find shelf after shelf of peanut oil — all of it refined, all of it processed with petroleum-derived solvents, and most of it completely stripped of the nutrients that made peanuts worth pressing in the first place.

1. Hexane vs. No Hexane
Most commercial peanut oil is extracted using hexane — a petroleum byproduct the EPA classifies as a hazardous air pollutant and a neurotoxin. Manufacturers use it because it maximizes oil yield: hexane dissolves into the peanut solids and pulls out every last drop of oil.
The hexane is then evaporated off — but trace amounts can remain, and the entire process requires subsequent refining (bleaching, deodorizing, high-heat treatment) to make the oil shelf-stable and palatable.
Cold-pressed peanut oil uses no solvents at all. Whole peanuts are pressed mechanically at low temperatures (below 40°C / 104°F). The oil flows out naturally. Nothing is added, and nothing needs to be removed afterward.

2. Nutrient Retention vs. Nutrient Destruction
Refined peanut oil is processed at temperatures above 200°C. At those temperatures, vitamin E degrades, natural antioxidants are destroyed, and the characteristic peanut flavour disappears entirely — which is why refined peanut oil tastes like nothing.
Cold-pressed peanut oil is pressed below 40°C. The vitamin E, natural antioxidants, and beneficial fatty acid profile remain fully intact. The oil has a rich, nutty aroma and deep flavour because all the natural compounds are still present.
You can literally taste the difference. Refined oil tastes neutral. Cold-pressed tastes like peanuts — because it is peanuts.
3. Smoke Point and Cooking Performance
One of the most common misconceptions about cold-pressed oils is that they can't handle high heat. Cold-pressed peanut oil actually performs well at medium-to-high heat — suitable for stir-frying, sautéing, deep frying, and high-heat roasting.
Refined peanut oil does have a marginally higher smoke point due to the removal of impurities — but what it gains in heat tolerance, it loses in everything else. Nutrients gone. Flavour gone. What remains is a neutral fat delivery mechanism with a long shelf life.
